Ladies & Gentlemen,
It is my great pleasure to
extend a warm and hearty welcome to Hon’ble Prime Minister and other
distinguished dignitaries on the dais, to the city of Hyderabad and to the State
of Andhra Pradesh,
I am extremely happy to participate in this opening
ceremony of this prestigious 21st annual conference of Academy of Sciences of
the Developing World (i.e., TWAS) in Hyderabad. I understand, over 900 elected
fellows from over 60 countries of all over the World are participated in this
Conference and I am told, over 85% of its members are coming from developing
nations, it represents the Voice of Science of the South.
It is a great opportunity for this esteemed Scientific
Community, that during this Conference to exchange scientific research findings,
modes of collaboration between themselves, enter joint R & D projects and
processes.
Hyderabad is honoured to play host to TWAS2010,
particularly because over the last two decades, Hyderabad has become a major
center of science and technology in India. It has the largest biotechnology
activities, with about 40% of all childhood vaccines being produced here. Major
pharma companies such as Dr Reddys, Aurobindo, EISAI, Shanta Biotech, Matrix,
Natco, Suven and others do not only product development and production, but also
engage in research and development.
In this endeavour, Hyderabad is blessed with outstanding
academic and research institutions such as the University of Hyderabad, Osmania
University, JNT University and Acharya NG Ranga Agriculture University, ICRISAT,
IIIT, IIT Hyderabad, BITS Pilani Hyderabad etc., and R & D labs such as CCMB,
IICT, NGRI, NIN, ILS, NIPER, DRDO labs, ARCI, NRSA, Survey of India and others.
Based on the R & D work done here, the State Government has
been able to establish an active Biotech Park, a Knowledge Park, and bring in IT
majors such as Microsoft, Oracle, Cognizant, Wipro, Infosys, and others.
In the health sector, Hyderabad has some of the finest
hospitals and medical centres- corporate and non-profit as well as government
aided ones. Stem cell research and therapy is practiced with success at the LV
Prasad Eye Institute and other centres.
The presence of Indian School of Business is contributing
to the best business research and development in Hyderabad. Thus, on behalf of
this exciting S & T city, I welcome you all. I am happy to share with this
august gathering that Hon’ble Prime Minister is going to lay foundation stone
for Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) second campus in Hyderabad in
this evening, which I consider a valuable and prestigious addition to the State
of Andhra Pradesh. I wish you a happy and memorable stay at Hyderabad and a
fruitful and constructive deliberations in your annual conference.
